Linden Primary School is committed in ensuring that all pupils make excellent progress in History, Geography and RE, through experiencing excellent teaching and a progressive and cyclical curriculum that engages and motivates them to succeed. Where possible, cross-curricular links are made to help children build schemas in their memory, making more and more sense of the things they have learnt over time. We aim to embed Reading as a core skill right throughout our curriculum in order for children to apply their learnt skills.
We aim to give children a humanities curriculum which inspires them to become confident, creative and independent learners who can explore the use of different knowledge and skills through their learning, we aim to engage children in real life experiences both inside and outside of school through carefully planned educational visits, visitors, experiments and exploration to enhance their learning.
We believe that R.E. both supports and strengthens what we aim to do in every aspect of school life – Our caring ethos and the value which we place on the development of the whole child; spiritually, morally, socially, culturally and intellectually is reflected in the Gloucestershire agreed RE curriculum.
RE Curriculum
Our intent for our Religious Education teaching is to enable children to make sense of a range of religious and non-religious beliefs and to understand the impact these beliefs have on individuals, communities and cultures. One of our main aims is to encourage children to make connections between the ideas studied in RE and their own ways of understanding the world. We want them to be able to challenge the concepts they've learnt and articulate their beliefs and values in response.
We currently use the Gloucestershire Agreed Syllabus: Gloucestershire Agreed Syllabus for RE
The syllabus highlights the importance of enhancing the learning of RE through experiences such as visits to places of worship, handling artefacts and speaking to people of different faiths about their beliefs.
All these experiences, including Linden School's high quality RE teaching, have encouraged the exploration of British Values that Linden School endeavours to promote and uphold.
Geography and History
We aim to foster a sense of awe and wonder about Geography and History. This will then inspire pupils to make sense of a complex and dynamically changing world and become global citizens. Studying Geography and History enables students to explore their own place in the world and builds on their own experiences to investigate places at all scales, from the personal to the global and including the past, present and future. With the support of the ReachOut Curriculum, we have our own intelligently sequenced, knowledge-rich curriculum, informed by the best research evidence available. Our curriculum is planned to ensure knowledge retention and is built to ensure it is coherent and progressive.
We have an exciting broad and balanced curriculum that enables children to dive into their learning. All of the year groups now teach Geography and History discreetly, to ensure subject integrity, but do-so offering lots of opportunities to learn key skills and knowledge, as well as having fun along the way through enriching purposeful experiences. Our curriculum mapping ensures that the knowledge and skills are progressive over time and that key themes of learning that children can hook their understanding onto are revisited and built upon.
