Homework activities are an important part of our home/school partnership and all children are expected to take part in a variety of homework tasks to enhance and support their work in class.
We value the support of parents/carers and we believe that this policy will be successful if there is a strong partnership between home and school which is reflected in the Home - School Agreement. We recognise that all children need leisure time and hope that our policy reflects a balance so children can extend and consolidate their learning with parental support while still allowing ‘down time’.
Reading
We would hope that children read daily and that reading for pleasure is valued at all times and is not just confined to the total time spent completing homework. This would include fostering early reading skills, where appropriate. We aim to promote a love of reading in every child. We encourage parents and carers to discuss their children’s books and ask questions about them to ensure that there is understanding of their books, as well as accurate reading.
Children will be allocated a book band by their class teacher which will suitably challenge their reading ability and help them to progress. Their reading material will be chosen from the correlating reading scheme at school.

Reading Celebration
To celebrate and encourage reading at Linden, pupils who go ‘above and beyond’ will be able to earn a raffle ticket. This will give pupils the opportunity to be entered into a monthly draw, with the chance to receive a new book. There will be a draw for EYFS and KS1 and a draw for KS2. This award is open to all!
This could include;
- Children who frequently read 3 or more times a week at home
- Children who use their initiative to ask to read to an adult in school
- Pupils who put in improved effort
- Pupils who read and share their enjoyment with their peers and adults in school.
- The options are endless but the goal is for children to continue to read for pleasure.
Spellings

- In Reception and KS1, phonic and spellings are closely linked.
- The children will be provided with a phonics/reading/spellings homework task on a Friday, which they will be expected to return to school on a Friday.

- Pupils in Year 3 upwards follow the Jane Considine spelling scheme.
- Each week children in KS2 are introduced to a new spelling pattern.
- The children will relate this pattern to a set of words and complete tasks around these.
- Children will bring home a spelling sheet on a Friday with their focus words on for the next fortnight. Spellings to be practiced in the form of handwring practice.
- Children will not be expected to return spelling sheets to school.

- Numbots – Children are set a weekly goal of 15 minutes completed activity on Numbots. This refreshes every Monday.

Times Table Rockstars
- Children in year 3 and 4 are set a weekly goal of 20 minutes on Times Table Rockstars. This is set on a _____ and should be completed for the following ____________.
- Children in year 5 and 6 are set a weekly goal of 10 minutes.
- In addition to Times Table Rockstars, children in years 5 and 6 are expected to complete homework on Complete Maths TUTOR.

For children who do not have access to devices at home, paper copies similar to the above tasks will be provided by class teachers where reasonable to do so.
For Times Table Rockstars, it is worth noting that in the summer term of year 4 children will complete the Multiplication Tables Check. Children are expected to answer 25 times table questions (multiplication only) with a maximum of 6 seconds per question.
Additional Homework Tasks
Year groups may set an additional ‘Homework Task’ for the children to complete that focuses on improving a particular skill. Tasks set will relate to work that the children are doing in school and will provide the children with opportunities to consolidate and/or extend their learning further. Homework content may be set as a written piece of homework or may include reading, games and activities to reinforce English, Maths or other skills. For older children an additional homework task may involve children carrying out research prior to a particular lesson. Additional homework will not be on a weekly basis, it will be set as the year group teachers feel necessary.
Knowledge Organisers
A Knowledge Organiser is a single page document that lists the important facts that children should know by the end of a unit for a particular subject. It is the minimum that needs to be known, rehearsed and stored over time in the long term memory. They should be viewed as the starting point for the unit being learnt and referred to throughout the unit.
How can the children uses them at home?
- To quiz themselves on the key facts.
- Learn the specific vocabulary and what they mean.
- To practice spelling key vocabulary.
- As a way to trigger memories from lessons about key information. Become familiar with the key text.
- Visit your local library, museums and trips to explore the unit.
- These can be used as conversation starters with your children to find out what they have learnt at school.
- To further research people, events and processes. Parents can support children in carrying out their own research around the units.
- It is also useful for children to go back to previous Knowledge Organisers and revise these so that the information from previous learning is not forgotten.
How will these help parents?
To understand exactly what their children should understand and remember. To know what language they should use when discussing learning at home. To know how to support their child in learning about a unit.
Children will bring home paper copies of their science and history/geography knowledge organisers. All other knowledge organisers can be found on the year group page on the school website.
Homework Club
If needed, your child can attend Homework Club on a Tuesday lunchtime to complete their homework. A teacher or Learning Partner will be available at this time to help and support with its completion.
